Anthony Dearden e Sheila Burke, due settantenni inglesi entrambi vedovi, si conoscono nel maggio 2016 quando Sheila, dopo un anno estremamente difficile costellato da dolorose perdite famigliari, cerca di contrastare la malinconia e il senso di solitudine iscrivendosi a un sito d’incontri online.

Sheila e Anthony si piacciono subito.
Lui la fa ridere proprio quando lei si è ormai convinta di non averne più motivo e le conversazioni in chat si fanno frequenti. Da un’amicizia virtuale al desiderio di incontrarsi faccia a faccia e trasformare il rapporto in qualcosa di più concreto, il passo è breve. Su consiglio della figlia Tina, Sheila accetta d’incontrare il suo Tony a Stamford Bridge, luogo in cui risiedono sia lei che i suoi parenti più prossimi e che le garantisce sicurezza e sostegno nel caso l’appuntamento non abbia un buon esito. Lo aspetta alla stazione e, appena lo vede scendere dal treno, è un colpo di fulmine. Ancora oggi Sheila si stupisce di quanto le sia sembrato naturale entrare in sintonia con quell’uomo, passeggiare in un parco mano nella mano e scambiarsi un bacio, già al primo appuntamento. Anthony, dal canto suo, la trova troppo buona e bella per lui, quasi come se sentisse di non meritarla. La loro storia continua tra i normali alti e bassi, le incertezze e i timori di un qualsiasi rapporto e, nonostante una pausa di tre mesi che è servita soltanto a consolidare l’amore tra i due, decidono di sposarsi. Per il loro matrimonio (lui si sposa per la seconda volta, lei per la terza) scelgono San Marino.
La piccola repubblica arroccata sul Monte Titano li conquista quando nel 2017 si recano in visita dalla figlia di Sheila, che vi risiede già da diversi anni. Anthony si innamora quasi istantaneamente dei panorami mozzafiato, delle mura antiche e degli scorci suggestivi del Centro Storico. Si appassiona alla storia di San Marino, ricerca informazioni sugli episodi più importanti che ne hanno caratterizzato l’evoluzione, si tiene aggiornato sugli eventi che si svolgono in Repubblica. Insomma, in breve tempo diventa un autentico ammiratore. È lui che propone di celebrare le nozze qui e chiede alla figliastra di verificare se sia possibile. Detto fatto. Sono i primi inglesi a sposarsi al Palazzo del Governo. Scelgono la data del 21 maggio, il giorno del compleanno di Sheila e da questo momento per i due sposi iniziano le sorprese. Il figlio di Sheila risiede in Nuova Zelanda e per lui e la moglie è impossibile partecipare all’avvenimento, così la nuora riadatta il suo abito da sposa perché la suocera possa usarlo alle sue nozze. Un modo originale per essere presenti anche se lontani fisicamente. Inoltre, avendo deciso tutto all’ultimo momento, molti parenti e amici hanno già programmato le loro ferie in altre località e si prospetta l’idea di una cerimonia fra pochi intimi. Immaginate lo stupore quando, scesi dall’auto, i due innamorati si ritrovano un ristorante gremito di gente. Tina, in gran segreto, è riuscita a radunare tutti gli amici che i suoi “genitori” (mamma e patrigno) hanno conosciuto nella precedente visita a San Marino e quella che doveva essere una cena tra una manciata di invitati si trasforma in una grande festa, mentre la sposa versa qualche lacrima di commozione. Tra gli ospiti non mancano nemmeno il primo marito di Sheila con la sua nuova moglie e un’ex di Anthony, anche lei accompagnata dall’attuale partner. Tutto questo a dimostrazione del fatto che, quando una relazione finisce, le persone possono decidere di continuare a volersi bene e condividere la felicità dell’altro. Partiti i festeggiamenti, tra brindisi e tante risate, Sheila si abbandona tra le braccia del suo Tony per danzare sulle note di “It’s now or never” di Elvis Presley, la loro canzone. “È ora o mai più”, il titolo del brano non lascia dubbi sull’intenzione di questa romanticissima coppia di cogliere l’attimo e non lasciarsi sfuggire le occasioni della vita. E infatti… Sappiamo che sono stati in Croazia e in Nuova Zelanda, che probabilmente sono in viaggio anche in questo momento e che continueranno a viaggiare finché potranno farlo. Perché la vita “è ora o mai più”.

Anthony Dearden and Sheila Burke, two English seventy-year-olds both widowed, met in 2016. After an extremely difficult year full of painful family losses Sheila tries to counter her melancholy and loneliness by registering on an online dating site.
Both Sheila and Anthony liked each other straight away.
He made her laugh just when she was convinced that she no longer had any reason to. The conversations in the chat got more frequent. From a virtual friendship they desired to meet face to face and transformed the relationship into something more concrete. After asking her daughter Tina advise, Sheila agrees to meet Tony, where both she and her immediate family reside, guaranteeing her safety and support in case the appointment does not have a good outcome. She waited for him at the station and as soon as she saw him get off the train, it was love at first sight. Even today Sheila is amazed at how natural it felt with him, walking in a park hand in hand and exchanging a kiss, on their first date. Anthony, thinks that she’s too good and beautiful for him, he felt as though he didn’t deserve her.
Their story continues between the normal ups and downs and the uncertainties of any relationship. Despite a three month break they decided to consolidate their love and decide to get married. Anthony is marrying for the second time and Sheila for the third. After previously visiting Sheila’s daughter, who has been living there for a number years, they chose San Marino, a small Republic perched on Mount Titano, to get married in. Anthony falls in love instantly with the breathtaking views, ancient walls and evocative scenery of the Old Town. He is passionate about the history of San Marino, he researches information on the most important episodes that characterize its evolution and is kept up to date on the events taking place in the Republic. In fact, in just a short time he becomes a true admirer and proposes to celebrate the wedding here and asks Sheila’s daughter to see if it is possible. No sooner said than done. They became the first British couple to get married at the Government Palace. They chose May 21st, which is Sheila’s birthday to celebrate their wedding and from this moment their journey is full of surprises. Sheila’s son and his family reside in New Zealand and have difficultly attending the wedding, so the daughter-in-law readapts her own wedding dress so that her mother-in-law can wear it at her wedding. An original way to be present even thought physically far away. Moreover, having decided everything at the last moment, many relatives and friends had already planned their holidays in other locations and the idea of a ceremony among a few close friends is proposed. Sheila and Anthony were amazingly surprised when they got out of the car to find a restaurant full friends and family. Tina managed to gather all the friends that they had met during their previous visit to San Marino and what was supposed to be lunch amongst a handful of guests turned into a big party, the bride was full of emotion with tears in her eyes. Among the guests were Sheila’s first husband, with his wife and Anthony’s former girlfriend and her companion. This goes to show that when a relationship ends, people can still continue to love each other and share their happiness. The celebrations begin, with toasts and lots of laughter, Sheila abandoned herself in Anthony’s arms to dance their song “It’s now or never” by Elvis Presley. The title of the song says it all, seize the moment and don’t miss opportunities that life gives you…. We know that they were in Croatia and New Zealand and that they are probably still traveling at this very moment and that they will continue to travel as long as they can. Because life “Is now or never”.
